WCAX is reporting about a common scam that apparently hitting a lot of Vermonters. The desciption seems to fit that of a common ransomware attack or the less-serious false infection scam where the scammers trick you into believing your computer is infected (it's not), then get you to pay for their remote "cleaning" service, often to the tune of hundreds of dollars. Of course, your computer isn't infected until after you give them access, at which point things get even worse.

The scam outlined is not new or particularly unique to Vermont, but it's always important to stay aware of such things.
